Ian Zuke artist, composer, and trombone player, is the driving force behind Toronto’s Clef, 23 describes his work as an effort “To remove the trombone from the traditional orchestral, jazz, and solo settings”. He believes the trombone “Can be used as a vehicle to express a wide spectrum of sounds and tones” he achieves this by utilizing the unique feature of the trombone slide, and the instrument's versatile dynamic range, enhanced with distortion and effect pedals. For his track Noisegaze he paired with percussionist Ethan MacGowan to produce 13 minutes of mantric sound.
Shunt, the alias of LA modular synth engineer Nate Lapinski, is always evolving. Sometimes boarding on beats but always quickly shifting in new and interesting directions as he modifies, upgrades, and intentionally sabotages his machine. Shunt at times takes a luddite approach to technology eschewing the DAW in preference of the long outdated BETACAM format. These contradictions between high technology and low fidelity perfectly encapsulate Shunt's artistic expression.
