Scott Churchman - Distraction (SM077)
We are excited to release the newest work from Scott Churchman, in collaboration with Boiled Records. We've been huge fans of Scott's existential crisis rock records for over a decade. Scott's hypnotic arrangements pair perfectly with his carefully pessimistic lyrics to create something depressed but never depressing.
"In prior incarnations, Scott Churchman’s music lurked in the corner at the party, watching you silently. It was a monolith of sorts. A beckoning darkness. Serene. Stark. Appetizing in the way the original Omen trilogy would be, if they’d just humanized the creepy kid a little.
Now, it’s a lot more wistful gaze than ominous stare. Scott’s new album Distraction drifts where his priors marched, eleven songs of baritone foghorn in a remote breeze. Scott has spent extended time in far flung corners of the world in recent years, Bahrain, Qatar, Kazakhstan. This music sounds like he saw things there, and might still be thinking about them. There’s a cigarette in a desert feeling to it all, a moment to stop and think before soldiering on.
The age old image of finding a flower in the midst of desolation is a powerful one, but doesn’t fully apply here. This one’s more like finding a useful tattered book in the wasteland." - MJ (Boiled Records)
