"In ugly times beauty is a protest"
Beauty is a genre destroying juggernaut that uses the tools of harsh noise and power electronics to make visceral, freaks-only doom. Douglas Vento (drums, vocals and electronics) and Dan Timlin (vocals and electronics) craft their churning drones not from guitars, but distorted synths and feedback loops, then glue them together with concussive drums and claustrophobic vocals swirling in delay. The result is a massive, suffocating sound best heard on the biggest possible speakers at the highest possible volume. Straddling the worlds of outsider metal, the extreme ends of punk, and experimental noise, this band belongs both everywhere and nowhere.
On their debut EP, Beauty forges a new path into the heavy genre. Wanting to differentiate themselves from “in the box” industrial metal bands, they chose to work with beloved drummer and engineer Dan Angel. Recording a live in the studio performance to 16 track tape and using an under-construction part of Angel’s Germantown warehouse as an echo chamber, the record uses classic recording techniques from 1960s pop music to capture the deep resonant bass and raw physical impact of their live performances.
Drums are at the heart of Beauty’s approach. Using a kick drum trigger and midi foot pedals to drive a custom step sequencer, Vento weaves together crushing walls of distortion, ear stabbing feedback, and chain rattling 808s with lockstep precision. Timlin pierces through the muck with fried electronics and a truly frightening vocal delivery. His lyrics explore the abject violence of the world around us, and how we turn that violence inward against ourselves in an attempt to make sense of an unbearable reality.
In the tradition of 90s classics like Man Is The Bastard, Corrupted, and Godflesh, as well as contemporaries like The Body, Pharmakon, and Uboa, Beauty explores the murky terrain between atonal, textural noise, riff driven sludge, and menacing industrial rhythms while staring down the bleak realities of modern society. As humanity spirals the drain, Beauty fires back at the death machine with a sonic declaration of pure negation.
